Children and Family Service Worker
- Wage: $17.00 – $18.89

Key Responsibilities
- Through empathetic care and with a non-judgemental approach conducts initial intake assessments (including evaluation of client/family and financials), determining immediate and ongoing needs and supports in accordance with policy
- Provides emergency assistance services (i.e. food, clothing, etc.) in accordance with policy
- Provides ongoing support to clients and families as needed
- Through exercising empathetic care, assists individuals to determine an appropriate and mutually agreed upon goal process; facilitates effective problem-solving behaviours of the client/family
- Provides spiritual guidance when appropriate and uses opportunities to pray with and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clients/families
- Encourages clients/families to participate in programs and services offered by our Community Ministries as well as our Church
- Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files and statistical records in the Link2Feed database
- May provide budgeting guidance for clients
- Assists in the organization, maintenance, general cleanliness, and COVID protocols of the Community Ministries Office and The Salvation Army building.
- Receives (and/or declines) and sorts/organizes non-monetary donations
- Works under the direction of the Community Ministries Coordinator and Corps Officers
- Networks and refers to The Salvation Army, government and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program, when necessary
- Will help develop and facilitate programs for children and families, as appropriate
- Helps with the coordination and organization of seasonal or special programs such as; Christmas Hampers, Community Programs / Events (Brave), Food Drives, Back to School, Camps and Community Dinners
- May direct and supervise volunteers, which include orientation to programs and training
- May be responsible for cash management
- Extensive knowledge and proficiency with MS Office programs, Database inputting and general office equipment
- May deal with clients who are have complex emotional issues.
- Donation pick ups
- Drives large vehicle (EDS -Food Truck) to various locations around the city.
- Cleans and sanitizes the vehicle after taking it out to meet requirements.
- Performs other duties as required

Qualifications & Experience
- Minimum Education: Diploma or Certificate in Social/Human Services from a recognized University/College
- Minimum 2 years related experience (including supervisory experience) working with families as well as vulnerable populations; addictions, mental health challenges, poverty, seniors, homelessness, unemployed, and persons with persistent multiple barriers.
- Extensive knowledge and proficiency with MS Office programs, Database inputting and general office equipment
- Current FOODSAFE LEVEL 1
- Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
- Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License
- Assets – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Effective communication 101, WHMIS

Work Environment
- Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Performance of the job requires a frequent amount of loading/unloading trucks, handing out hampers, receiving/sorting out donated or purchased goods, and computer work
- Performance of the job requires attentive listening (empathy to clients/volunteers), and attention to detail when entering data/computer work.
- The incumbent could need to work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Temperature variations when out in the CRU
- Cramped working areas
- Work-related stress
- Dealing with angry and/or abusive clients

Exposure to Hazards
- The incumbent could be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
- Physical and verbal attacks by others
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to chemicals (e.g. cleaning)
- Moving objects
- Sharp objects
- Risk of back strain
